Phuket is widely known for its beaches but many people overlook its colorful cultural values. Come to Phuket Town at the east coast of this beautiful island and you will quickly change your mind.

Thanks to its prime location in the affluent southern Thailand, Phuket has a fascinating history. Europeans have arrived here since the 16th century, but the largest number of foreigners here are in China when they massively pour into aluminum mining in the late nineteenth century.

Therefore, the culture on the island is mixed and expressed clearly through the works as well as cuisine. People call this special culture "Baba" or "Peranakan".

Works of the Sino-Portuguese style

Local residents have built works bearing the stamp of two European and Chinese cultures. If traveling to Phuket, you can start exploring the architecture of this type from Standard Chartered Bank building, then to the colorful shops in Thalang.

Shops at Soi Ramanee with gilded pillars are also a good choice. Phra Phitak Villa Chyn Pracha and the old house of Chan Pracha have similar architecture. In order to understand better, you should go to Phuket Thaihua Museum.

Along with the Sino-Portuguese architecture, Phuket Town has many ancient Chinese temples. One of the most noteworthy is the Taoist temple located on Phang Nga Street built in the 1890s.

If possible, come here at the end of September so that you can witness the breezy atmosphere as well as enjoy the vegetarian festival to commemorate the nine deities of Taoism. Two Jui Tui and Bang Niew temples are the main venue for the ceremony.

For dessert, Cookie House will be the right choice for a variety of cakes. If you like the combination of flavors, Suay restaurant with famous green papaya salad will certainly make you satisfied.
